Well, TheRaven said to post this in the gaming forum, so I guess this is the Hacks and Mods for games General Thread.

List of Hacks/Mods made by forum Members:

Pokemon Crystal Insane Version (Patch)  Vizzed link.: Difficulty Hack of Pokemon Crystal.

By tailszero - Finished?: yes, unless I can find better editing tools.

Summary: Difficulty hack of Pokemon Crystal. The trainers/rival/gym leaders have generally better parties, and level grinding is mostly useless after the first gym. The pokemon you can trade for are much more useful, but I was unable to change the obedience levels for the gyms, so Scizor will disobey you for a long time. Good luck beating Clair/Lance/Blue/Red without savestates.

Note: Some of the trainers I was not able to edit, so don't freak out if you find a person with a level 20 poke in the same route as a guy with a team in the 60s. Also, the game will be kinda easy in gyms 3-7 and parts of Kanto if you manage to find the wild pokemon that drop Exp Shares. Which one is that? Why don't you find out?

Edit: This post will be updated accordingly each time a new hack/mod is posted here!

Mod Edit: Links are provided to the posts of the hacks so that more information can be provided

Here is TheRaven's Sonic 1 hack, Ring the Ring.

I will have to check that out later, sounds epic. :) Here's a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog called Ring the Ring. The idea came about when someone over at Sonic Retro posted a image. xD Oh and if you don't get all the chaos emeralds, you'll see a special message from me. xP Don't take it personally, it's supposed to be a joke. Here is the patch file, you'll have to use google to find a ROM though.

MechaGS

Yay, the ring patch. I'm having some fun today. :D

TheRaven

I'm sorry I didn't give this to you sooner I fell asleep early and was going to send you the link last night but oops. xD I'm very tempted to make those sequels now. :P

MechaGS

No worries, I wasn't going to bother you over it cause you'd have sent it eventually. :)

tailszero

Why don't we put all of the hacks/mods in the OP (or links to the posts) to make things a bit easier to find? What do you say?

TheRaven

Now that would be a wonderful idea, so it'll be easier to find each hack/mod. ^_^ I will edit the OP.

tailszero

We might want to include the descriptions too, and probably put each hack/mod into the format I have for mine, but for know that works because your hack's post is right beneath the OP.

TheRaven

I will definitely add a description to future hacks and mods, when I edited your post I was in a hurry since I had to get offline. xD Thank you for these awesome ideas. ^_^

I believe ROM hacking is a legal thing. IIRC, you're allowed to own ROMs of games as long as you actually own the game in physical form. As long as you have no intent on making any kind of money on selling the ROM hack as a product, you should be allowed to do anything that you want to it. I don't know the legality.

MechaGS

Jay's correct. You can legally own a ROM or ISO of a game that you own for backup purposes. It must be that exact copy though, that's where things get a little grey in the law as there's no easy way to rip a cartridge.

ROM patches are completely legal as they aren't part of the ROM themselves, they're loaded later separately, so we get to have fun with old game code and hex. :)

TheRaven

What pirates do is illegal though, they'll make horrible rom hacks or steal decent ones and sell them for profit. But yep as long as you own the game it's fine to have a ROM, but honestly I betcha many people don't follow this rule. :V Speaking of ISOs, I have a Sonic CD hack but I don't think I want to post it here since you can't patch a ISO. :P

MechaGS

You're right about people not following the rule, but that's because they make it incredibly hard to replace consoles and the media used with them. I've been through two Dreamcast's for example. I had my launch one and a second-hand one cause my disc drive eventually went kaput.

It would be so much easier if they just made emulators for each old retro platform and you could legally buy the ROM's for a reasonable price (like Nintendo's eShop but without the crap).

Are you kidding me? We have a topic about ROM hacks and NO ONE has mentioned the countless Megaman NES hacks out there? Now go have fun, kids.

I personally recommend Deux Ex Machina, No Constancy, Gray Zone, Yendor Code, Minus Infinity and Air Sliding.
