Should the X series resume or reboot?

Do you think the X series should resume with Megaman X9 or should it reboot with a whole new story? I felt X8's story was getting a bit wild for everything the series had set up so far.

I've felt for a long time now that if Mega Man returns, it needs to be entirely re-booted for a new generation. As much as I love the classics, the franchise could do with a bit of a do-over.

In the case of X, I think that the PSP game; Maverick Hunter X (a remake of Mega Man X) was a good example of what could have been down the road in terms of a reboot but they didn't continue and the whole thing died out. It shouldn't have only been on PSP, that was it's downfall.

So, yeah for me a full-on reboot would be nice to see. I don't think Capcom care enough though.

crapcom (capcom) doesn't really care but the $$$$ amount. I loved playing as vile in the X game remake.

MechaGS

I had a think about this one last night and I don't think I'd want to buy into a Capcom made reboot. I'd love a reboot, but I don't trust them enough with my money any more.

I think it would need to go the way Devil May Cry did and get an external party to show it some proper love. Maybe WayForward could look into making us a Mega Man game since they worked with Capcom to give us DuckTales Remastered. :)

If Megaman X were to continue, it should get X9. X8 was awesome and provided what I think the perfect ending that could essentially lead to the Elf wars mentioned in the Zero series. X9 could probably cover that, with the ending of X8 as the jumping point, and provide a great tie in. While the series is already connected to each other, it'll be awesome to actually be able to see that connection.

I hadn't really thought of this but it's a good point. I probably could go for a X9 for closure on various aspects not yet shown.

I'm liking what wayforward is doing with shante. So I'm for them working with megaman.

I don't think having an X9 would be a good idea. Sigma is dead and not returning as of the ending of X8, and the only hanging plot thread in between X8 and Zero 1 is if Axel is infected. Either way, we know that Weil steals Zero's inactive body, the Mother Elf, and causes incredible devastation to the planet. The Elf Wars could be covered in a game, but whatever happened would probably not fit the version players likely made in their imagination. Also, the Mega Man games never cover what happened between the various Series very well, and just leave little possible plot thread. After all, if capcom has been incredibly vague about what happened between the classic and the X series, why would they make a game about the elf wars?

As for a full reboot, that could be possible, but X would join Classic as being a franchise Zombie.

As I have yet to still play through X7 and X8 myself I really can't give to much of an opinion but I think I recall them saying that X5 was supposed to be the ending of that series to tie in the Zero series and that didn't happen so maybe a reboot would be okay. Better yet as much as I love the X series I think if Capcom was to come back to their senses they really need to focus on the Legends series and not worry too much about the X series. Just my two cents, but I really should play through the rest of X7 and X8. :V

MechaGS

I'm on the opposite side of the coin. I don't really care too much for the Legends series (only because as a European, it's hard to get) and the X series was always amazing gameplay-wise.

Either way though, a reboot of something Mega Man is sorely needed. :)

What I actually wish is that they make a new series in the Rockman X timeline, showing other Maverick Hunters and the missions they faced. Maybe extend/conclude what happened after ZX Advent epilogue.

But as far as the Rockman X series goes:

Quote from: "TheRaven"X5 was supposed to be the ending of that series to tie in the Zero series

This is what links Rockman X to Rockman Zero. X, during or before the Elf Wars, was devastated that Zero "died" that he created a new body for him, was going to uploaded the little memory of the him he had left; which could have basically been nothing, or an imprint that they are friends, which X just made up with his recollection.

If we were to take the X6-8 as cannon, Zero needs to re-die, the cyber-elves need to be introduced, and Sage Harpuia, Phantom, Fefnir, and Leviathan's back-story needs to be provided. Heck, we can make the side story be the back-story to the Four Guardians, as the Reploids lives stretch that far as X.

Thus, I am up for an extra side story, cont. of Rockman X to Rockman Zero (Elf Wars), or cont. of ZX Advent. The Rockman to Rockman X story is pretty much self explained. The Rockman Lengends isn't.

Reboot please. X4 has 2 storylines that are completely unrelated. X6 has the dumbest story ever. And don't get me started with the whole "I'm done fighting Mavericks" things in X7.

IIRC, It was said long ago that the X series should've end at X5 according to Inafune-san. But seems Capcom's higher-ups have other ideas...

It's typical of big-business to milk on something even if it should have ended (Call of Duty anyone?) a long time ago.

What I don't get though is why X had to be continued instead of a new canon spin-off being added; always boggled the mind. It's not like Inafune-san ever seemed short of ideas for Mega Man.
