Quote from: Swan DiveI wonder how much that will hurt them?  Business must be bad in the West.  Never was into CAVE games myself, I don't know anyone who is either.

I'm a CAVE gamer (for the bullet hell / shumps mainly) and it's a shame to see them shutting up their western arm.

At some point it seemed like they made a paradigm shift. I think it was by the time they released that silly visual novel, which oddly was released on Xbox 360 instead of PS3 (where the otaku audience migrated to by that time). Needless to say it was a complete commercial blunder.

Since then (2011) onwards the only arcade STG they made was DDP Sai Dai Ou Jou, which had a 360 port that at some point was supposed to launch in the West too, however the western version never happened and the japanese 360 port had mediocre sales even for Cave STG's standards. For some reason their japanese audience didn't like the game enough, despite they made the characters cuter (Probably with the intention of replicating the success of Deathsmiles).

Alas, all of Cave's focus have been ever since on the Mobile/iOS market and some Japan Only compilations/remasterizations, plus they've been losing talented people, so it's not to be surprised they're cutting ties with a market they see as apathetic regarding the ultra niche within the niche that are STGs.

You know what could save them? RELEASING THEIR GAMES ON STEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM!!!!!!

But sadly they lack the balls to try and probably won't even release a port until more japanese publishers jump into Gaben's ship.

Kickstarter could help too, given the really low budget nature of 2D STGs. But after Comcept's fuck ups with the MN9 experience i wouldn't bet on many japanese developers going with it. Besides, non-japanese influence would probably be for the worst.

But one thing is for sure. A digital only release would be less risky bet for a western port, and they don't even have to localize it (like it happened with Deathsmiles IIX which is the pure japanese version. If there's one XBL GoD purchase i don't regret, it's this one). Plus, it'd allow consumers to avoid the resellers and their prices + shipping.

Hopefully Sony's policy regarding publishing games on demand will be favorable to small developers (unlike Microsoft's until a while ago).

Swan Dive

Wow, it's been a loooong time since I played Thief. Great game, though my computer was too new when I got it, and it didn't run too well on XP.  Going to wait for Steam sales and resist spending $60 this.. :D My wallet cried when I bought Bioshock Infinite for $60 and saw it for 75% off during the holidays..

Reminder: MGR:R is like 3-4 hours long and it's a 60USD game at launch, but that game doesn't count the cutscenes (besides it's a crazy hack n slash with lots of replayability due how addictive is slashing enemies in their weak spots and the parry system.

The important questions are:

On which difficulty setting did the reviewer play the game? This can change everything, because if the reviewer was playing on Easy then he could've gone #YOLO from one waypoint to the next disregarding enemy fire.

Does the time counter of the game include the cutscenes? Another obvious game changer for a Kojima game.

Nonetheless it's still quite short (for the price of admision) if you're planning to buy the next-gen version or live in Europe.

The worst part will be having to wait like one or two more years after release until the full game is in stores.
